Longtime friends and Sienna neighbors have brewed up something special, and Fort Bend couldn’t be more excited.
Keith Teague and Chuck Laughter are the co-founders of Talyard Brewing Co., a newly opened brewery and restaurant in Sienna’s sister community of Imperial. The endeavor has been four years in the making, but their friendship dates long before that.
The pair met in 2000, and the common bonds of kids around the same age and similar interests helped them form a fast friendship. Six years later, the bond had deepened so much between the two families that the Teagues and Laughters built homes next to each other in Sienna, joining their two backyards for one large outdoor space.
The idea for a craft brewery was hatched over beers in that shared backyard, often with Sean Maloney, who is now Talyard’s brew master. In fact, that’s how the brewery was named — a combination of Teague and Laughter, plus “yard.”
“Sean attended high school with Chuck’s son, and over the years, we’d see him at family gatherings during the holidays when he was visiting from the West Coast,” Keith said. “Those backyard beer sessions turned into area brewery tours together, and eventually the idea of sharing our passion here locally was born.”
The pandemic and a slow business cycle prompted them to turn their dream to reality. It took two years for architectural design, zoning and permitting. The 15,000-square-foot production and tap room facility broke ground in late 2022. Also that year, they began pilot brewing operations in a 2,500-square-foot warehouse space to perfect their recipes. Talyard’s “pourfolio” features 10 original creations, including IPAs, a Kellerbier (an unfiltered German lager) and fruited tart beers.
Talyard’s 20-barrel brewhouse can produce around 10,000 barrels annually. Guests can sample the beers and enjoy a menu of pizzas, salads, burgers and more in the shaded dog-friendly beer garden designed to accommodate up to 1,500 people. Local musicians perform on the beer garden stage. Televisions air sports, and a playground keeps children entertained. Dogs are welcome, as well. There are even two pickleball courts for those who want to burn some calories.
